So the NHL season started this weekend and so now all the games are meaningful, right? Oh, no, we are back in the preseason again. Good. Because the Islanders got smoked last night by the Panthers (Nemmy's pick to win the Tavares sweepstakes). I don't know how I feel about the NHL opening weekend in Europe. The stupidest part is that other teams are still playing exhibitions and we (fans) have to wait a week for all real games to start. Its like no one really knows the season started. Even the NHL Network didn't show "On The Fly" on Monday. That really got to me.
Anyway - it was a solid weekend for The 2 Man. Friday night, we ventured to the tavern to watch ourselves talk with Captain Bill Guerin and his best bud Doug Weight. For those of you who are don't get MSG+ or actually had better things to do on a Friday night. Our segment is below:
Al Bress didn't like Scotty's entrance... whatever he's old.
Since we were in the hockey mood, Jeff (the bartender), put on the NHL Network for us. Of all the things that could have been on, a vintage game, some stupid top 10 list, last years playoffs... nope it was Hockey Academy. Now as much as I need to work on my crossovers, we wanted to watch real hockey. Luckily, the tavern has direct TV and we found a preseason game between the Red Wings and Maple Leafs. We wrongly assumed that there would be a fight. At the end of the preseason, those tough guys looking to stick around always drop the gloves. Unfortunately, the Wings have no tough guys and the Maple Leafs plain suck. Anyway this led to a discussion regarding who get the number draft pick this year (read: the worst team in the NHL). Scotty picked the Leafs. Bress (me) chose the Thrashers. Nemmy says the Panthers. And A was confident with his Kings pick. Who you got?
Scotty and Nemmy also made a bet on whether or not Shane Doan is on the 2010 Canadien Olympic team. Scotty says yes. The winner will get enough to replace McG's jacket.
Now, finally onto the real games:
- The Lightning, as expected, are bad defensively.
- Vinny should have had at least 2 goals in each game, but maybe that shoulder is affecting him.
- I like the rangers top line. Maybe Naslund will get into double digit goals.
- Barry Melrose already is trying his best Tortorella impression. Can't wait to see what happens once this team really goes into the tank.
- Penguins looked good on Saturday and bad on Sunday.
- Malkin's goal was nice and a lucky. He really seems to get the luckiest short-handed breakaways.
- Alex Auld's helmet>Martin Gerber's helmet.
- Dany Heatley, 60?
What did I miss?

I think the Blues will take the top pick, but it doesn't sound like Tavares is a lock to go at 1. He's definitely got as good a shot as anyone, but not as much of a lock as it was a year ago.
My pick is the Thrashers
Al Bress didn't find that funny?
Did he give a reason?
$200 jacket!
I'll go with St. Louis.
